BCHS physician to present about diabetes and the complications

Dr Forrest Robart

Diabetes is a disease in which the body does not produce or properly use insulin, the hormone that is needed to convert sugar, starches, and other food into energy needed for daily life. The cause of diabetes continues to be a mystery, although both genetics and environmental factors such as obesity and lack of exercise appear to play roles.

Dr. Forrest Robart will be making a presentation titled 'All About Diabetes and the Complications' at a 'lunch and learn' session on Wednesday, March 12, at the Burnham Brook Center. Senior Health Partners in coordination with Battle Creek Health System presents the program, which is free to the public.

A light luncheon will be served at 11:30 a.m. followed by Dr. Robart's presentation at noon. Seating is limited. For reservations call Senior Health Partners at (269) 441-0948.

There are more than 20 million children and adults in the United States, or 7% of the population, who have diabetes. While an estimated 14 million have been diagnosed with diabetes, unfortunately, 6 million (or nearly one-third) are unaware that they have the disease.

"Whether you've just been diagnosed with diabetes or have had the condition for awhile, chances are you have a million questions running through your head," says Dr. Robart. "Questions such as 'Which type of diabetes do I have? What can I eat if I have diabetes? What affects my blood sugar? How do I check my blood sugar?'"

It is essential that people with diabetes take care of themselves. Being well informed is a first step toward better diabetes care.

Dr. Robart's presentation will focus on the types of diabetes, reviewing the factors affecting blood sugar, and the preventive measures one can take in reducing diabetes. He will also discuss the associated complications related to diabetes such as heart disease and stroke, kidney disease, eye complications, diabetic neuropathy and nerve damage, including specific focus on foot and skin complications.

Senior Health Partners, a collaboration of Battle Creek Health System, Burnham Brook Center, and Summit Pointe, works to expand wellness and educational offerings to senior citizens in Calhoun and surrounding counties.
