Dr. Comai to speak on total hip arthroplasty

Hip pain is a common complaint expressed to primary care and sports medicine physicians. Often times, the only recourse to alleviate the discomfort is through arthroplasty, more commonly called a total hip replacement. This is a surgical procedure that relieves pain from most kinds of hip arthritis to improve the quality of life for the large majority of patients who undergo the operation.

Patients typically chose arthroplasty after non-operative treatments (such as activity modifications, medications for pain or inflammation, or use of a cane) fail to provide relief from arthritis symptoms. Many studies that have followed patients for more than 10 years have found 'success rates' exceed 90 percent or more following hip replacement.

Dr. William J. Comai, an orthopaedic surgeon at Battle Creek Health System will speak on 'A Brief History of Total Hip Arthroplasty' on Wednesday, January 27, at the BCHS Orthopaedic Renewal Center, PARC Room from 6:15 - 7:30 p.m. The presentation is free to the public.

Reservations can be made by calling the class/seminar registration line at (877) GO2-BCHS (877-462-2247).

This presentation will cover how hip replacement has evolved from the 1890s to the present, including some of the recent dynamic changes in procedures. The audience will be encouraged to ask questions.
