Battle Creek first gained its popularity through the reputation of the Battle Creek Sanitarium. Under the leadership of Dr. John Harvey Kellogg, the Sanitarium developed into an institution recognized around the world for its "health building and training" regimen of hydrotherapy, exercise, and vegetarian diet. Soon a new industry grew from the kitchens at the Sanitarium, where a healthy breakfast food, cereal, was developed for the patients. People converged on Battle Creek as it became known around the world as the "Health City." At the turn of the century, Battle Creek was the fastest growing industrial center in Michigan, located at the convergence of several major rail lines.

CommunityToday, Battle Creek continues to enjoy a strong economy and brisk pace of growth. Battle Creek is also quickly becoming one of Michigan's hottest tourism destinations. Home to Binder Park Zoo, one of the state's top ten attractions, Battle Creek also includes the 3,000 acre Ft. Custer recreational Area, the Leila Arboretum and Kingman Museum of Natural History, Full Blast, a unique 80,000 square foot youth entertainment mall, numerous parks and lakes, and 22 public golf courses within a 25 mile radius. In addition, every year Battle Creek hosts some of the state's most celebrated festivals including the Cereal City Festival and World's Longest Breakfast Table, the International Festival of Lights, the U.S. National Hot Air Balloon Championship, and the Art Fair at the Creek.

Kellogg's Cereal City USA opened in 1998 and is an interactive exhibit relating to health, marketing and cultural impact of cereal. It includes a main theater that will make you feel the size of a salt shaker and places you on the breakfast table and a mixed media presentation on the legacies and history of the Kellogg Brothers.
